Enter Madwal, who started with figures of 0/37 against Punjab Kings in the first game of the season. In the next match against CSK, he took just one wicket, conceded just four wickets and took the wicket of the dangerous Devon Conway. His first breakthrough was a three-wicket haul in the next match against Gujarat Titans as MI beat the reigning champions by 27 runs and clinch this season’s final. His scores included Wriddhiman Saha, Shubman Gill and David Miller, and Madwal’s performance did not go unnoticed as Suryakumar made 103 not out from 49 balls. Another century, this time from Green, led to a four-wicket haul under the radar against SRH, but it was the Uttarakhand pacer who shone the brightest in the Eliminator.

The wicket was not an ideal match as Madwal’s innings wizard Suryakumar Adadav was covered by a brilliant face and Rashid Khan finished with four wickets and 32 for 79 with the ball.

Madwal is 29-years-old, but he’s not a typical latecomer to the league. The right-hander has played just 22 T20s before the start of Roorkee IPL 2023. He also played 17 List A and 10 First Class matches for Uttarakhand. He had attended the Mumbai Indians camp last year and joined the squad as a replacement for the injured Surya.

“Last year was with MI and around the set-up. Then Surya (Suryakumar adadav) took the role when he was injured. This year, Syed Mushtaq did really well in the Ali Trophy and showed what he can do at the death level. So, I think they got to know what he is capable of and what a good player he is,” said Aditya Tare, who played with Madwal in Uttarakhand this year, in an exclusive interview with CricketNext.
